With This Movement I Honor You
(Ritual)
In Constellation work, we observe the transgenerational impact of men or women not being able to fully honor each other due to entanglements or identifications. Forces outside of the family system may also be a catalyst for disconnection between men and women.
One pattern of disconnection that may often be seen is a result of social castration of the men in a family and community. Due to the interruption in the ability of men to stand as men, there is the inability of women (generationally) to honor men. This honoring of the men is not an antifeminist, brainless lauding, but a deep respect that comes from the soul of one human being to another.
Utilizing Constellation as ceremony, a memory of honoring can be reintroduced to a family and community system. In their 2006 article, “Couple Relationships in Brazil: Racial Mixing and the Legacy of Colonization,” Decio and Wilma Oliveira discuss the anger toward husbands that may result from the historical biracial rape of native women in Brazil. Another part of that historical dynamic is the inability of aboriginal men at the point of conquest to protect the women of their family. Further, after the introduction of greater military force, aboriginal men often faced the imposition of a new political force that prevented them from being able to hunt or provide for their family within the framework of their own historical social structure.
Not only aboriginal men have experienced social castration. Many indigenous men in the Americas and Australia experienced disempowerment through the force of European invasion or the subversion of conquerors. But numerous political upheavals and historical pressures have also displaced men. Ireland has had men isolated from solid employment for generations, based in part upon their political loyalty to the crown. Men have been displaced politically from being able to care for their families in Russia and China under similar circumstances. The gender dynamics have had a similar insult as a consequence of slavery in the United States and the continued exclusion of black males from upward social mobility. Gradually, I came to understand that my original observation of this dynamic as being exclusively an aboriginal phenomenon was ethnocentric and limited.
Within a framework of political polarities, respect between men and women is often one of the casualties. There is a community Constellation that seems to plant the seeds for the beginnings of deep healing in a community that has experienced the political imposition of impotence on generations of men.
At the request of several individuals who taught me that my sense of the application of this ceremony was limited, I will summarize how a movement is introduced that acknowledges both men and women in a good way.
This honoring Constellation as ceremony movement is best introduced as a community constellation.
